Most rowing machines try to hide their mechanics. The WaterRower Metallic S1 does the opposite.

Its brushed marine-grade stainless-steel frame puts the structure on display, giving the machine a sharper, more architectural presence than the wooden WaterRower models. In the right interior it feels less like gym equipment and more like a piece of industrial design.

The experience, however, remains unmistakably WaterRower. Each stroke moves real water through the flywheel tank, creating a resistance that builds naturally with your effort and a quiet rhythm that many people find unexpectedly calming.

It’s a rare piece of training equipment that manages to feel both technical and contemplative — something you use to train the body, but also to reset the mind.

WaterRower was designed in the mid-1980s by Yale graduate and U.S. National Team rower John Duke, who founded WATERROWER Inc. in 1988 in Rhode Island, in the northeastern United States.

Inspired by the natural movement of rowing on water, Duke developed a rowing machine that used a water flywheel to recreate the smooth, self-regulated resistance of a real boat.

More than three decades later, WaterRower continues to manufacture its machines in Rhode Island, where the company remains headquartered in the small coastal town of Warren.
