PING PONG - THE GAME OF THE CREATIVES AND VIRTUOUS

PING PONG - THE GAME OF THE CREATIVES AND VIRTUOUS
Can you guess what 19th-century English upper-class ladies were up to when they were stacking up books on the dining table, ripping off lids from cigar boxes, and piling up corks from champagne bottles? Believe it or not this is how the game of ping pong started. Books were used as nets, cigar box lids as bats and corks as ping pong balls. Whiff-Waff, Pom-Pom, or Pim-Pam are just a few names they used to call it before Ping Pong prevailed. It was common for Victorian era parties to end with a good game of Whiff-Waff...after desert. What the English society realized 140 years ago is still valid today: nothing like a good game of ping pong to lift the spirits of a group of people.

With the emergence of manufactured equipment in the 20th century ping pong transformed from being a pastime activity of the privileged few to a popular sport for any age and social standing. It even helped bridge the divide between China and the US during the cold war period in what became known as the Ping Pong Diplomacy (google it). There is even an oldest player in the Guinness Book of Records, Dorothy de Low, was almost 98 years old when she represented Australia in the 2008 World Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Brazil.

Ping pong is a way to do physical exercise that has actual athletic qualities but is kind of contained. You do not run around tracks and you do not have large playing fields to cover, however, the short quick movements make it an intense exercise. Because of the confined area of action and the speed with which players need to assess moves, the game has also a real mental element to it by promoting strategic thinking.

Just like at social gatherings 140 years ago, ping pong can also help modern day organizations build and support culture; it is a great tool to help team members get to know and interact with each other. Moreover, a quick break of ping pong during the day has shown to help become more productive and creative, and even promote problem solving ability; no surprise it is the game of choice for people in the creative industry, especially for start-ups.

Now that you have hopefully learned something new today, this editor needs a creative break from writing. I am setting up my ArtNet ZigZag to engage in friendly combat.

THE SUSTAINABILITY EDIT

THE SUSTAINABILITY EDIT

There is no such thing as guilt-free consumption, even our most mundane daily choices (think waste disposal) have an impact on the world, our environment, and persons around us. Many of us strive to improve as persons, products, or organizations but it is often very easy to dismiss our own impact in contributing to sustainable consumption. No matter how little we each contribute, when aggregated to society level our individual actions produce results. The 21-year-old third millennium will be the age when humanity transitions from carefree consumption to a smarter, more environment friendly way of approaching everyday life. As a global society we are still far away from leading a totally sustainable life but hey, the first flight of the Wright brothers only lasted 12 seconds and 36 meters and 120 years later we can take showers over the Atlantic (yeah, I know…not exactly a sustainability example but it shows the progress mankind can make when we put our minds to it).

At ninjoo we try to embrace sustainability any way we can and we know that we are far from perfect but Rome was not built in a day, and in the end long-term developments are all about the right mindset, and that ninjoo has. When we look for products we always look at the story behind them, their creators and the passion these individuals put into realizing them, and one passion that always catches our eye is sustainability. Especially when it comes to the luxury segment we believe products have a responsibility to leave as small a footprint as possible on earth since by definition they are…well luxury.

Sustainability can have different faces, sometimes not easily recognized as such. RS Barcelona, for example, sees durability of a product as the essence of sustainability and their commitment to the planet and society is to manufacture top-quality, hard-wearing items through environmentally friendly production processes that last a lifetime. Bredder, a small brand from Germany known for its high-quality handmade balance boards, uses only regional and certified suppliers, and embraces a holistic sustainability approach down to the corrugated cardboard packaging that ensures there is no plastic in the entire production journey. The Swedish paddle/tennis brand Nordicdots, in true Scandinavian spirit, makes a point of respecting the environment and its inhabitants and therefore incorporates sustainable eco-friendly innovations in everything they do. They go as far as recently endorsing tennis player Andrey Kuznetsov from Russia because he is an ardent advocate of sustainability and eco-friendly innovations.

Ninjoo’s take on sustainability: one small step for each one of us, one giant leap for mankind (credit to the first man on the moon).

PADELICIOUS

PADELICIOUS

Build a glass or Perspex cage with two opposing open doors on either side, throw in a Tennis net in the middle, let two players (more commonly couple teams though) use rackets with solid hitting surfaces rather than strings combat each other, and mix up the rules so you can bounce the ball off the walls or even attempt to stay in the game by running through the doors to catch a ball that was knocked out of the ballpark…sounds crazy, right? Enter Padel!

Most easily explained as a mix between Squash and Tennis with a twist, Padel is developing an almost fanatic following in the Middle East and is a fast-paced, high-energy sport that challenges a player's skills and endurance to the maximum. Unlike Squash and Tennis, you can actually credit the invention of Padel to one single person in Mexico. In 1969 Enrique Corcuera decided to modify the Squash court at his home in Acapulco with elements of Tennis and when his Spanish friend Alfonso Hohenlohe-Langenburg tried it in Enrique's home he took the sport to Spain to create the first Padel court in Marbella in 1974…and the rest is history.

How does Padel work? The court is 25% smaller than a regular Tennis court, the net is 88cm high, rackets are without strings, to add speed balls are more pressurized than in Tennis, and the ball is allowed to bounce off the wall and can even be played from outside the court as long as it doesn't bounce twice on the field. All this creates incredible, sometimes crazy ball exchanges and is equally interesting to play and to watch.

Naturally, the sports industry has picked up on the trend and most tennis racket brands have their own offering of padel rackets and at ninjoo we could have picked any racket for you, but we wouldn't be…well ninjoo, if we didn't have our own opinion on the subject. For us, the element of style and design is a must-have complementary element to playability and technical specification. We wanted rackets that are equally professional equipment and distinguished design to help our customers stand out from the crowd, and the usual padels in the market just didn't make this cut. Random design patterns with oversized brand logos on the playing surface maybe great for a brand's visibility on court but they are not a showcase for individual style; and that is how Nordicdots caught our eye. True to the Scandinavian design principles of minimalism and functionality Nordicdots designs are mainly based on color and texture with complete absence of bold random patterns, and discreet branding that is visible on close up encounters but does not turn you into a flag-bearer for the brand. Also, and in true Scandinavian spirit, Nordicdots makes a point of respecting the environment and its inhabitants and therefore incorporates sustainable eco-friendly innovations in everything they do.

Nordicdots is a young brand, driven by the passion of its creators, and many of you will know by now that ninjoo has a weakness for passionate creators as these are the true pioneers that go where no man and woman has gone before (credit to the all-time classic captain Kirk).

HOW TO HANG YOUR MVP LEATHER HEAVY PUNCHING BAG

HOW TO HANG YOUR MVP LEATHER HEAVY PUNCHING BAG

by

MODEST VINTAGE PLAYER LTD

A punching bag is a dynamic piece of exercise equipment that can be useful for professional fighters and fitness seekers alike. The beauty of a boxing bag is that you don’t need to be in a gym to get good use out of it. You can hang it inside your home, garage, back porch, or anywhere you can find the space. But after you buy a punching bag, your next step is to properly learn how to hang the bag. It will help to avoid unnecessary incidents, and that is what we will be talking about in this post.

There are 4 different ways to hang the punching bag, we will cover all of them below so you can pick the one that seems the most convenient and easy for you.

Location for the Punching Bag

After you purchase a punching bag, you need to find a perfect location to hang the bag. It should be somewhere that has open space for a workout.

The best workout requires you to have 360o access to the bag, so keep that in mind when you are selecting the place.

Also, note that you have the option for hanging the boxing bag from the ceiling or a wall. Consider all these factors and decide on the space.

We thought it prudent to answer some questions that are frequently about the punching bags here as well:

  • Do punching bags offer a good workout?

Yes, they provide resistance to muscles and cardio exercise for the body.

  • Are punching bags waterproof?

Some synthetic punching bags are, but quality leather punch bags are not.

  • What are punching bags filled with?

Pulp, sand, rags or a mixture of all. For more info on How to Stuff your Heavy Punching Bag read our blog here.

  • Are punching bags bad for joints?

Absolutely not, it helps make them stronger by giving them resilience.

  • Can you hang a punching bag outside?

Yes, but make sure to cover it or bring it inside if there is rain.

  • Can a punching bag hurt your hands?

Yes, so make sure that you are wearing the bag gloves when you work out.

  • Are punching bags good for muscle building and losing weight?

Yes, they provide resistance to muscles and build new fibers. Bag workouts are great cardio and are excellent for weight loss.

1.      HANG FROM A SUPPORT BEAM

Most people prefer to hang the punching bag to a support beam on the ceiling. If you don’t have an open support beam in your home, then skip this part.

Hanging your bag from the ceiling will give you better mobility when you work out. Ensure that you are selecting the strongest support beam for the task. The heavy punching bags can weigh up to a 100 pounds and can cause damage if the beam is not strong enough.

Make sure that you have all the required equipment at hand before you start;

  • A drilling machine

  • Eyebolt

  • Wrench

  • Bag and chains

  • S-hook

Now you can begin, it is recommended that you have someone else there to help you;

Step 1: Drill a hole in the support beam.

Step 2: Twist an eye bolt into the hole, tighten it with a wrench. (Avoid the using hooks as the bag can easily slip out of it during the workout)

Step 3: Connect the chain to the bag and then the chains to the S-hook.

Step 4: Lift the bag up, with some help if required, and hang the S-hook to the eyebolt.

Throw a few test punches to check if the bag is properly secure before clearing things away.

2.      HANG USING A CEILING MOUNT

Ceiling mount

There are different types of ceiling mounts available online that can help ease the hanging process. They will come with the required nuts and bolts that will be needed.

The mounts can be placed on ceiling joists or beams. A location where the joist meets the beam would be ideal as it would offer the strongest support.

Equipment that you will be needing;

  • Marker

  • Drill machine

  • Mount

  • Nuts and bolts

  • Screw driver

  • Wrench

  • Bag and chains

Steps for hanging the bag on the mount are;

Step 1: Place the mount on the ceiling and mark out the placement of bolts.

Step 2: Drill holes in the marked areas.

Step 3: Place the mount and screw in the bolts using a screw driver or wrench.

Step 4: Attach the chains to the bag and the S-hook.

Step 5: Lift the bag and hang it on the mount with the S-hook.

Don’t try to hang the bag on dry wall, it will cause a lot of damage to your ceiling. Move the bag around a little to see if it is secure.

3.      HANG USING A WALL MOUNT

You may not have the option of hanging the bag on the ceiling or you may not be comfortable with it, whichever the case, you have the option of wall mounts.

Don’t use the wall mount on the dry wall, it is only recommended for masonry walls.

Equipment needed for wall mount;

  • Marker

  • Drill machine

  • Mount

  • Nuts and bolts

  • Screw driver

  • Wrench

  • Bag and chains

Steps for hanging the bag on the wall mount are;

Step 1: Place the mount on the wall and mark out the placement of bolts carefully.

Step 2: Drill holes precisely on the marked areas.

Step 3: Place the mount on the walls and tighten the bolts.

Step 4: Attach the S-hook and the bag to the chain.

Step 5: Hang the bag on the wall mount.

Practice a few punches to check if there are any issues with the mount.

4.      USE A STAND

There is also the option of using a stand to hang the bag.

Although they are portable, cheaper, smaller stands can be risky when used with heavy punching bags. They can move around too much - you will have to weigh them down using sandbags.

Attach the chain to the S-hook and bag and hang it on the stand.

Pick any method that you feel is the best for your location and follow the instructions. After that you will ready for your punch bag workouts, make sure you have heavy bag gloves to go along with the bag; to avoid injury.
