The Original is the model that made WaterRower famous, and it’s still the one we return to most often. The solid wood frame gives the machine a warmth that most fitness equipment simply doesn’t have, which is why it works surprisingly well in a living space.

What really sets it apart is the water resistance. Instead of mechanical drag, every stroke moves real water inside the tank, producing a smooth pull and a quiet sound that feels closer to rowing on a lake than training indoors.

Depending on the wood finish — oak, walnut, cherry, or ash — the personality shifts slightly, but the experience remains the same: fluid, quiet, and unusually calming for a full-body workout.

WaterRower was designed in the mid-1980s by Yale graduate and U.S. National Team rower John Duke, who founded WATERROWER Inc. in 1988 in Rhode Island, in the northeastern United States.

Inspired by the natural movement of rowing on water, Duke developed a rowing machine that used a water flywheel to recreate the smooth, self-regulated resistance of a real boat.

More than three decades later, WaterRower continues to manufacture its machines in Rhode Island, where the company remains headquartered in the small coastal town of Warren.
